Introduction |
Design
& Technology - DT is a vital part of the national
curriculum, which is meeting the challenge of modernising
its content and skills. It is a compulsory subject for all
pupils aged 5 to 16. It is being increasingly recognised
that DT provides all pupils with skills that will be both
valuable and necessary to them after 16.
DT offers excellent opportunities to use ICT as computer
aided design and manufacturing (CAD/CAM) became compulsory
from Key Stage 3 with the revised national curriculum. The
Design and Technology Association - DATA manage the CAD/CAM in
Schools Initiative and with DfES funding have established
a pilot schools project in English schools with a clear
strategy for the release of software to any school in
the UK.
Information and Communications Technology - ICT has
been compulsory for all pupils aged 5 to 16 since the
inception of the National Curriculum. It originally
formed part of the National Curriculum Technology Order.
Pupils are also being given the opportunity to develop
their ICT skills within the context of the other subjects
of the National Curriculum, with the exception of physical
education.
However, DATA in association with MARCONI have devised
a program of learning that now includes a whole level
of curricula experiences based on Electronic Communications
Technology- ECT. And this could become an addition the
National Curriculum. ECT is able to draw on a whole
range of elements that are able to cross DT and ICT
in a very neat and valuable education experience. One
that can offer sound transferable employment skills
for the 21st century.
Key skills are the generic skills which individuals
need in order to be effective members of a flexible,
adaptable and competitive workforce and for lifelong
learning.
